How to Verify Your Supplement Brand's Testing Claims — Before You Buy

The label says “third-party tested.” So does the label next to it, and the one on the shelf below. Three different products. Three different certification logos. And if you Google any of those logos, two of them lead to websites that haven’t been updated since 2019.

This is the supplement industry’s quiet problem. “Third-party tested” has no legal definition under U.S. law. Any company can print it after sending one bottle to any lab, receiving a single document, and calling it a day. There’s no requirement that the testing be ongoing, randomized, or conducted by an accredited facility. The phrase is marketing copy until proven otherwise.

The U.S. dietary supplement market generates more than $62 billion per year — and the regulatory framework governing it, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, requires no pre-market approval from the FDA before a product reaches store shelves. That places the verification burden almost entirely on you.

The good news: there are real, legitimate ways to verify a brand’s testing claims independently. Here’s exactly how to do it.

What “Third-Party Tested” Actually Means (And When It Doesn’t)

Third-party testing exists on a spectrum. At one end, you have a brand that paid a few hundred dollars to check that their vitamin D capsules dissolve within a certain time window. At the other end, you have a brand that undergoes annual, unannounced audits from an internationally recognized certification body — one that pulls retail samples, tests for heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiological contaminants, and publishes the results publicly.

Both can technically claim “third-party tested.”

The certifications that carry real weight in the U.S. market are:

  • NSF International (NSF/ANSI 173): Covers identity, potency, label accuracy, and contaminant testing. All certified products appear in a publicly searchable database at nsf.org. NSF also offers a “Certified for Sport” program used by professional and collegiate athletic organizations.
  • USP Verified: The U.S. Pharmacopeia’s verification program checks that ingredients match label claims and meet pharmacopeial purity standards. Their verified mark database is searchable at usp.org.
  • Informed Sport / Informed Choice: Both programs test specifically for World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited substances — especially relevant for sports nutrition products.
  • ConsumerLab.com: An independent subscriber-based service that buys supplements directly off retail shelves and publishes test results. They’ve been doing this since 1999 and are frequently cited by researchers and healthcare providers.

The critical thing all four have in common: you don’t have to trust the brand to verify them. The evidence lives somewhere else — on a website the brand doesn’t control.

How to Independently Verify a Supplement Brand’s Testing Claims

These five steps take about 15 minutes total for any product you’re considering.

Step 1: Find the certification seal and check it on the certifier’s own website.

If the label shows the NSF International seal, go to nsf.org and search for the product by brand name or SKU. If it shows USP Verified, search at usp.org/verification-services. If neither the brand name nor the specific product appears in the database, the seal is either lapsed or fabricated. Don’t rely on the brand’s own website to confirm its own claims — that is not verification.

Step 2: Request or locate the Certificate of Analysis.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the lab document that shows test results for a specific product batch. Legitimate brands either publish COAs on their website (searchable by lot number) or provide them within 24–48 hours of a customer request. When you receive one, ask three questions:

  • Is the issuing laboratory ISO/IEC 17025 accredited? You can confirm this through A2LA at a2la.org or the ILAC member database. ISO 17025 is the international standard for testing laboratory competence — it means the lab itself has been audited for its methods, equipment calibration, and staff qualifications.
  • Does the COA show quantitative potency results, or just a pass/fail checkbox?
  • Does it include a contaminant panel? At minimum, look for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury) and microbial testing.

A COA that shows only “ingredient detected: yes” without a specific milligram result is nearly useless. It tells you something is in the capsule — not how much.

Step 3: Check the FDA’s warning letter and import alert databases.

At fda.gov, you can search warning letters by company name. Warning letters are issued when FDA inspectors identify labeling violations, GMP failures, illegal health claims, or product contamination serious enough to put in writing. A brand with multiple recent warning letters isn’t necessarily out of business — but those letters are telling you something. The FDA also maintains an import alert list for products blocked at the border due to safety concerns. Both databases are free and publicly accessible.

Step 4: Search the CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System.

The FDA’s CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System (CAERS) compiles consumer-reported adverse events linked to specific dietary supplement products. The database is publicly searchable. It’s not a perfect signal — reports can be incomplete or unverified — but a product with a high volume of reports tied to serious symptoms warrants real caution regardless.

Step 5: Ask about the manufacturing facility and its GMP status.

Under 21 CFR Part 111 — the federal regulation governing Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) for dietary supplements — manufacturers must test incoming raw materials, maintain batch production records, test finished products, and employ qualified personnel for quality control. Many brands use contract manufacturers, which is common and perfectly fine.

What matters is that whoever makes the product holds valid GMP certification. Ask the brand directly: “What facility manufactures your product, and can you share their NSF GMP registration number?” NSF International maintains a public registry of GMP-certified facilities. A brand that answers this question clearly has nothing to hide. A brand that deflects and redirects you to marketing language about “quality and purity” has already answered the question.

Red Flags You Can Spot in Under 60 Seconds

Not every verification effort requires five steps. Some warning signs are visible immediately:

No physical address on the label. Under 21 CFR 101.5, supplement labels must include a domestic address for the responsible party. No address at all — not even a PO box — is a direct labeling violation.

“Proprietary blend” covering all active ingredients. Proprietary blends are legal under current rules, but they prevent any meaningful dose verification. A product listing “Proprietary Stress Support Blend 450mg” across 11 different herbs is impossible to evaluate against any published clinical evidence.

Certifications with no searchable database. “Certified by [Name] Institute” or “Tested by [Name] Labs” means nothing if that certifier has no public verification system. Real certification bodies publish their certified product lists.

Disease claims without the required disclaimer. Supplements cannot legally claim to treat, cure, diagnose, or prevent disease — that’s a drug claim, and making one without an approved New Drug Application is illegal under FDA rules. Structure-function claims like “supports healthy immune function” are permitted, but they must appear alongside this exact disclaimer: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.” A missing disclaimer is a straightforward violation of 21 CFR 101.93 — a small detail that signals how carefully the brand pays attention to compliance.

No lot number on the packaging. Lot traceability is a fundamental GMP requirement. Without one, you can’t link your specific bottle to any COA the brand provides.

Why This Verification Gap Exists — And What’s Being Done About It

Between 50,000 and 80,000 dietary supplement products are estimated to be on the U.S. market at any given time. The FDA’s Office of Dietary Supplement Programs operates largely as a post-market enforcement body — inspecting facilities, issuing warning letters, and pursuing recalls after problems emerge. Pre-market safety review, as pharmaceutical drugs receive, simply doesn’t exist for supplements under DSHEA.

That’s a structural gap, and it explains why independent verification has become so valuable. Some large retailers — including major pharmacy chains and warehouse clubs — now require third-party certification documentation before a supplement brand can list products in certain categories. Amazon has implemented similar requirements for specific supplement types under its marketplace seller policies. These aren’t regulatory changes; they’re market mechanisms, and they’re gradually raising the floor.

In the meantime, the tools described above are genuinely effective. According to testing data from Qalitex Laboratories, products verified through ISO 17025-accredited third-party labs show significantly lower rates of label inaccuracy than self-reported or uncertified products — a finding consistent with ConsumerLab’s published results across more than two decades of independent testing.

The supplement industry has operated for 30 years with relatively light regulatory oversight. Many brands have used that space responsibly. Others haven’t. Knowing which is which takes about 15 minutes and four browser tabs — and it’s worth every one of them.
