Boiron's CEOs on the Future of Natural Health: Canada, USA, and Beyond

From the Nourify & Beautify interview with Daniel Dereser & Janick Boudazin

From French Family Business to North American Leadership

Boiron is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of homeopathic medicines, with roots in Lyon, France, dating to the 1930s. The company has grown from a family operation to a global presence, with significant operations in Canada and the United States.

In this conversation recorded live at Natural Products Expo West 2025, Nour Abochama connects with Daniel Dereser (President & CEO, Boiron Canada) and Janick Boudazin (President & CEO, Boiron USA) to explore how a company built on homeopathic tradition is navigating modern North American markets — where regulatory frameworks, consumer expectations, and competitive landscapes differ from Europe.

What Boiron Actually Makes

Boiron produces homeopathic medicines — products prepared according to homeopathic pharmacopoeias, using the principles of dilution and “succussion” (vigorous shaking) that are central to homeopathic practice. Their product lines include:

  • Single remedies — Arnica, Belladonna, Nux vomica, and other traditional homeopathic preparations
  • Combination products — Formulas targeting specific conditions (cold and flu, sleep, stress)
  • Oscillococcinum — One of their best-known products, marketed for flu-like symptoms
  • Topical preparations — Gels and creams (e.g., Arnica gel) for muscle and joint comfort

The company operates under FDA regulations in the US (homeopathic drugs have a distinct regulatory pathway) and Health Canada regulations in Canada. Both markets have seen increased scrutiny of homeopathic product claims in recent years.

The Regulatory Landscape: US vs. Canada vs. Europe

Homeopathy is regulated differently across markets:

United States: The FDA has historically exercised enforcement discretion for homeopathic drugs that met certain conditions. In 2019, the FDA announced a new enforcement approach, focusing on products with safety concerns, unapproved disease claims, or that are marketed for vulnerable populations (e.g., infants) without adequate evidence. The regulatory environment has tightened.

Canada: Health Canada regulates homeopathic products as Natural Health Products (NHPs) when they make health claims. Products must be licensed, with evidence of safety and efficacy submitted. The evidence bar for homeopathic products has been a subject of ongoing discussion.

Europe: Homeopathy has a longer history of acceptance and integration into healthcare in several European countries. France and Germany have strong homeopathic traditions. Regulatory frameworks vary by country, with some allowing homeopathic products under simplified registration when indication claims are not made.

Daniel and Janick address how Boiron navigates these differences: “We comply with the regulations in each market. Our approach is to work within the frameworks that exist while continuing to invest in research and quality.”

Innovation, Education, and Accessibility

A recurring theme in the conversation: making natural health accessible — not just to consumers who already seek it, but to those who are curious but confused.

Education: Boiron invests in consumer and healthcare practitioner education. Understanding when and how to use homeopathic products requires some baseline knowledge. The company provides resources for both retail consumers and practitioners.

Accessibility: Price and distribution matter. Boiron products are available in mainstream retail (pharmacies, grocery stores) as well as natural product stores. The goal is to meet consumers where they are.

Innovation: While homeopathy is tradition-bound in its preparation methods, Boiron has innovated in delivery formats (e.g., dissolvable tablets, liquid drops), packaging, and combination formulas that address modern health concerns.

The Evidence Question

Homeopathy remains controversial from an evidence standpoint. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have generally found that homeopathic products perform no better than placebo when rigorous trial methodology is applied. Proponents argue that homeopathy operates through mechanisms not captured by conventional clinical trial design.

Nour’s perspective, from her quality control and laboratory background: “Whatever one’s view on homeopathic mechanisms, the products that reach consumers must be manufactured to high quality standards. Identity, purity, and consistency matter. Boiron’s investment in GMP manufacturing and quality systems is relevant regardless of the evidence debate.”

Daniel and Janick emphasize Boiron’s commitment to quality: “We manufacture in GMP-certified facilities. We test our raw materials and finished products. We stand behind what we make.”

Key Takeaways

  • Boiron is a global leader in homeopathic medicines, with significant operations in Canada and the USA
  • Regulatory frameworks for homeopathic products differ across the US, Canada, and Europe; compliance requires market-specific strategies
  • Education and accessibility are central to Boiron’s mission — meeting consumers in mainstream retail and providing clear guidance
  • Quality standards (GMP, testing, traceability) apply to homeopathic products as they do to conventional supplements and OTC drugs
